How Santa Claus found the Poor House – Story Review

I really like this story. It is about a boy named Helioglobus, whom everyone calls Gobaly, and his friend Methuselah. They live at the “Poor House” with other kids and the lady who runs it is named Mrs. Pynchum. The story begins with Gobaly shoveling snow, and he sees this dog running around with a basket in his mouth. A horse cart with some boys in it comes up the street and the dog spooks the horse, and it runs the cart right over the dog.(we never know his name) So Gobaly comes over to the dog and looks him over to see if there are any broken bones, and his leg is broken, so he makes a splint for him. He tells Methuselah-or ‘Thusely- to come out of the house and see the dog. ‘Thusely is convinced that Santa Claus sent the dog as a Christmas present. Then Gobaly remembers the basket, and thinks maybe it will have some sort of identification for the owner. It does, and the dog belongs to “Dr. Carruthers, care of Richard Thorndike, Esq.” So Gobaly loads the dog onto his sled and brings him to Squire Thorndike’s house. When they get him inside, Dr. Carruthers is very impressed with Gobaly’s work, and he talks to the Squire for a long time. Then he asks Gobaly if he would like to come with him back to New York, that he needs an office boy and he could learn medicine and possibly become a doctor. Gobaly says yes, but remembers ‘Thusely and quickly says no and runs out of the house. The next night, which is Christmas, Squire Thorndike and Dr. Carruthers come to the house. ‘Thusely runs up to the doctor and says “it’s Santa Claus!” Dr. Carruthers gives him a big bag of candy and picks Gobaly out of the people sitting by the fire. Well, ‘Thusely has this hip disease that is very hard to be cured, and the doctor offered to heal him. Then he asks if ‘Thusely has any friends or family. He says “I’ve got Gobaly.” Dr. Carruthers asks Gobaly if that’s why he said no, and he says yes. The doctor offered to take ‘Thusely, too. Methuselah goes to the hospital and is cured at the end, and Gobaly becomes a doctor.
